For Lily Konigsberg, it seemed that the path to success was laid out in front of her. Years of hustling in the underground music scene, both with her long running band Palberta and under her own name, garnered her a sizable cult following. Through rigorous touring and word of mouth, she earned "your favorite songwriter's favorite songwriter" status and was on track to being recognized as a force of nature in the wider music world with the release of her critically lauded debut album (Lily We Need to Talk Now which came out on Wharf Cat in 2021), and her 2022 album as a duo called My Idea with Nate Amos of This Is Lorelei/Water From Your Eyes.
Since 2022 Konigsberg has been silent, but today she is returning to share a new song called “Free Byrd,” her first single in nearly 5 years. The product of time spent working with her longtime friend and collaborator Hugo Stanley (Palm, Frankie Cosmos), who she enlisted as both a producer and instrumentalist, the song is a fitting introduction to a new creative era for Konigsberg. It's an ode to the bittersweet nature of starting again and of the sacrifices required to do so, serving as both empowering breakup anthem and a swan song for a tumultuous past life. An infusion of Lily's signature earworm-generating pop sensibility and Hugo's punchy arrangements, "Free Byrd" makes a convincing last-second bid for song of the summer, and serves as an immensely promising preview of things to come.

About The Best of Lily Konigsberg Right Now
This compilation, which compiles all of Lily Konigsberg’s musical output up until her first album, is a musical omnibus—the first widely distributed Lily Konigsberg physical release as well as the first vinyl treatment for both Good Time Now and 4 Picture Tear. The collection loosely parallels the melancholic narrative behind the latter, where a mental break triggered Konigsberg’s depersonalized sense of her past self. Of the 4 Picture Tear EP, Konigsberg says, “I would look at this photo-booth picture I took with Matt [Norman] and cry because I thought I was looking at the person I used to be in that picture and that person was gone.” In retrospect, these three EPs feel like distinctive vignettes of Konigsberg’s progression as a songwriter, each version of her past selves tethered by an invisible thread to the present through musical alliances and fervent introspection.
